Julian Nagelsmann could drive next move for Jurgen Klopp amid Manchester United links

Jurgen Klopp could return to management, but his next move hinges on the future of Julian Nagelsmann, amid growing interest from Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp, who took a break from management after parting ways with Liverpool, could end up making a return in the near future. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann could drive the former Borussia Dortmund manager’s next move, according to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider.

Nagelsmann, who is set to lead Germany in the World Cup this summer, could make a return to club management amidst interest from Manchester United. After parting ways with Bayern Munich at the start of 2023, the 38-year-old tactician was handed the reins of his country.

So far, he has led them in 29 matches, averaging close to two points per game. While he is currently focused on helping Germany go the distance in the biggest event in world football, Nagelsmann is heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.

Christopher Vivell is pushing hard to bring him to Old Trafford. He is a massive admirer of the former Bayern manager and feels he is the right man to lead their project. The two share a great bond, having worked together at RB Leipzig, and it could play a part in a potential move.

Nagelsmann could take up the United job

The 38-year-old’s contract with the German national team runs until the summer of 2028. However, reports suggest he could leave them after the World Cup to take up the United job. If he does end up leaving the national team, it could result in Jurgen Klopp’s return to management.

The German manager parted ways with Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after a nine-year-long successful spell. He decided to take a break from management and is currently Red Bull’s Head of Global Football. While he is very happy in his current role, it would be very hard to bring him back on the touchline; the Germany job could tempt him.

Klopp to make a return to management?

While speaking about Klopp’s potential return, O’Rourke said, “Obviously the news came a bit left field really that Jurgen Klopp’s agent claimed that Manchester United and Chelsea had both made inquiries for Klopp after he left Liverpool.

“Look, it isn’t going to happen. Jurgen Klopp isn’t going to return to the Premier League to any other club apart from Liverpool.

“We don’t know the exact timescale of it. It might have been a year or more ago that they actually inquired about Klopp, or whether they did or not.

“Both clubs quickly came out and denied that was the case.

“I think if Klopp ever returns to management it’ll be for a club outside the Premier League and possibly the Germany national team job is something that might be of interest to him.

“But he’s happy in his role at the minute with Red Bull. He was at the Winter Olympics this week, so he’s obviously not missing management too much.”

If Nagelsmann makes way and the job becomes available, Klopp will be one of the favourites to take over. The German national team role might be one of the few opportunities that would be very difficult for the 58-year-old to turn down.

He has reportedly turned down offers from Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as the England job after Gareth Southgate’s departure. As a result, it will be interesting to see if he does end up making a return. Everything depends on United and their pursuit of the former Bayern boss.
