Former West Ham regular Vladimir Coufal (33) set to sign Hoffenheim contract extension: “We’re so happy to have him here.”

Kicker reports that Czech fullback Vladimir is set to sign a contract extension with his current Bundesliga outfit. The former West Ham mainstay joined Hoffenheim on a free transfer this past summer, yet only inked a one-year-deal. The 33-year-old has nevertheless showed no signs of slowing down and totally exceeded expectations.

How important has Coufal been to Hoffenheim?

Hoffenheim’s revival owes much to the 59-times-capped Czech international. Many of the team’s problems last season related to the fact that the squad didn’t feature quality fullbacks. Coufal – from pre-season onwards – has helped set a new tone on Christian Ilzer’s side. The veteran has featured in all 22 Bundesliga contests, scoring one goal and registering seven assists.

Coufal has proven especially adept at raising the game of his teammates. An excellent example of this happens to be Coufal’s countrymen and fellow defender Robin Hranac. Considered a complete bust last year, Hranac has become a pillar of the TSG defensive corps thanks to Coufal.

Coufal picked up two assists in yesterday’s league win over Freiburg. In another example of how Coufal makes his fellow Hoffenheim players, right back Valentin Gendrey picked up his second goal in TSG colors after replacing Coufal late.

Valentin Gendrey is a competitor for Vladimir Coufal’s position,” head coach Ilzer noted at the post match press conference. “But he’s also the reason both are performing so well. They push each other in training.

More Hoffenheim praise for Coufal

He conveyed to me that he wanted to finish in the top six [in the table],” Ilzer also remarked at the post match press conference yesterday, recalling when he first met his new signing. “I really liked that, because I knew he was totally focused on success. Irrespective of his age, he delivers a high level of quality in all his endeavors.

He’s a great guy,” TSG goal-scorer Fisnik Asllani – one of the recipients of Coufal’s crosses – added in the mixed zone. “You can tell he hs a lot of experience. He hits great crosses. He’s a fighter and a runner who works for the team. We’re glad to have him.”

He’s a world-class guy and an absolute model professional,” TSG midfielder Grischa Prömel also said whilst speaking to reporters. “There are many players who could learn a thing or two from him. Just the way he stands in his boots, assertive and strong. We’re very happy to have him here.
