Inter Contemplating Re-Upping with Aging Midfielder
Inter will likely move on from most of their veterans in the summer, but they might make an exception for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and keep him around. Yann Sommer, Francesco Acerbi, Stefan De Vrij, and Matteo Darmian are the others on expiring contracts, Corriere dello Sport relays.
The veteran hasn’t shown signs of decline in a reduced role. Injuries have made him a regular again in the last month or so. Piotr Zielinski has leapfrogged him in the ideal pecking order, and Petar Sucic is nipping at his heels, but he has still made 24 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and assisting twice.
If Inter opted to retain Mkhitaryan, it’d be on a cheap one-year pact. He moved to San Siro on a free transfer from Roma back in 2022. He penned his only real extension 12 months later. The 37-year-old has spent some time on the shelf just once so far.
The former Manchester United man would be content to keep going in Milan. At this stage, he’s not considering other destinations or exotic leagues. If he weren’t offered a renewal, he’d likely hang up his boots.
Our Take on Inter and Mkhitaryan
He’s not as dynamic as he used to be, but his technique and IQ aren’t going away. He’s arguably in the right role when they are whole, as he has often helped them manage leads and put away games off the bench. His future likely hinges on what the brass wants to do with their other midfielders. If they finally rip the band-aid off with Davide Frattesi and maybe loan out Andy Diouf, they could hold onto the Armenian to avoid a deep overhaul.
