Former Chelsea, PSV and Stoke City midfielder retires from football at the age of 33
Marco van Ginkel has retired from football at the age of 33. The former Chelsea and Stoke City midfielder had been playing in the top flight of Portuguese football for Boavista but has decided to call time on his career having not made any appearances for the side this season.
Van Ginkel made his name during his time with Vitesse, where he played 11 games between 2009 and 2013. The midfielder spent a long time on the book s at Chelsea, but only made four first team appearances for the side. Instead, he was loaned out to the likes of AC Milan and Stoke City. He also spent a handful of seasons on loan at PSV before finally leaving Chelsea in 2021 permanently to join the Eindhoven side. In 2023 he left PSV for a return to Vitesse, making another 45 appearances for the side before his final swansong in Portugal with Boavista.
During his time with PSV he won two Eredivisie titles, two Super Cups and one KNVB cup. Van Ginkel was also capped at senior international level by the Dutch side on eight occasions.
