Sheffield Wednesday eyeing last-gasp move for Joel Ndala

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly eyeing late January move for Manchester City sensation Joel Ndala.

Sheffield Wednesday are racing against the clock to complete a late loan move for Manchester City winger Joel Ndala before the transfer window slams shut.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan at fellow Championship side Hull City, meaning any deal would require City to first terminate his existing spell at the MKM Stadium. According to Sky Sports, with just hours remaining before Monday’s 7pm deadline, talks are ongoing as Wednesday attempt to finalise what would be their fifth signing of the winter window.

Ndala was notably left out of Hull’s matchday squad for Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, adding weight to reports that his loan on Humberside is set to be cut short. Hull currently have seven loan players registered following the arrivals of Lewis Koumas and Toby Collyer, with only five permitted in a matchday squad, making Ndala’s situation increasingly precarious.

Sheffield Wednesday are understood to be in direct discussions with Manchester City, exploring the feasibility of a temporary move to Hillsborough for the remainder of the season. If completed, Ndala would offer Danny Röhl another attacking option as Wednesday look to strengthen in wide areas during the business end of the campaign.

Ndala has made 19 appearances in all competitions for Hull this season, starting 10 Championship matches and scoring twice, once in the league against Derby County and once in the EFL Cup against Wrexham. He was an unused substitute when Hull drew 2-2 with Wednesday at Hillsborough on Boxing Day.

Born in London, Ndala joined Manchester City’s academy from Port Vale in 2017 at the age of 10, in a move reportedly worth £300,000. A highly-rated youth prospect, he enjoyed a prolific 2022-23 campaign, scoring 16 goals and registering nine assists across City’s youth sides, including 13 goals in the Under-18s Premier League.

He went on to become a regular for City’s Under-21s and featured in the EFL Trophy, before an ill-fated loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last season failed to materialise into a permanent move. Subsequent time with Nottingham Forest’s Under-21s followed, before City opted to send him out for first-team experience with Hull last summer.

Ndala has also represented England at youth level, including the U19s and U20s, and was part of the Manchester City squad that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2024. He is yet to make a senior appearance under Pep Guardiola.

Primarily a left-sided winger, Ndala is known for his pace, direct dribbling and ability to operate across the front line when required. While his goal return at Hull suggests there is room for improvement in end product, his raw attributes and versatility make him an intriguing short-term option.

With time running out, Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Ndala has all the hallmarks of a deadline-day gamble,  one that could yet pay off if a breakthrough is made before the window closes.
