Official | FC Bayern Campus shake-up begins with hiring of Nürnberg youth director Michael Wiesinger

FC Bayern Munich have officially confirmed the installation of Nürnberg academy director Michael Wiesinger to a new personnel position on the FC Bayern campus. Get German Football News has reported on this move earlier, noting that the shake up is geared towards giving FCB sporting director Christoph Freund more administrative sway in Bayern developmental matters.

Bayern leave Markus Weinzierl’s future open

It does remain unclear as to whether Wiesinger’s arrival will herald the departure of Markus Weinzierl at the Säbener Straße. Weinzierl remains in his role as Athletic Director for now, but may be released at the expiry of his contract at the end of the season. Wiesinger is due to begin work at the Bayern Campus in the spring. Both Wiesinger and Weinzierl will act as support staff for Bayern Campus directer Jochen Sauer until the current campaign concludes.

Statements on Wiesinger’s move

Jochen Sauer, Christoph Freund, and myself have been thinking about how we can improve matters at the FC Bayern Campus,” FCB Board Member for Sport Max Eberl noted in a club statement. “The campus plays a major role for us. A lot has been said, and now we are here and want to tackle things that we think will be good for FC Bayern in the future. Markus Weinzierl has done a great job, but one still must take a look at everyone and ensure that one has ‘top people’.

“The campus is becoming more and more of a focus at FC Bayern,” Sauer added in his own statement. “This is demonstrated by the current playing time of our young talents with the pros, especially Lennart Karl. This also increases our daily workload. To assist with this, we have hired an experienced youth manager in Michael Wiesinger. Michael has done a successful job in Nürnberg for many years, and we’re convinced he can help us tackle future challenges.

I had a wonderful time as head of youth development in Nürnberg,” Wiesinger himself said. “Now I’m really looking forward to the exciting task of playing a responsible role in talent development at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Michael’s work ensured 1. FC Nürnberg is a good and attractive destination for young players,” FCN sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou said. “The fact that he is now embarking on a new path is a great loss for us.
