Official | Union Berlin head coach Steffen Baumgart extends contract
Union Berlin have announced that head coach Steffen Baumgart has extended his contract at the club, with die Eiserner currently sitting in ninth.
Baumgart took charge of Union just over a year ago, replacing Bo Svensson as head coach. Since taking over, the former player of Union has rescued them safely from relegation, and this season have made the Stadion An der Alten Försterei a fortress, nearly beating Bayern Munich in the league and DFB Pokal this season.
On extending Baumgart’s contract, managing director Horst Heldt said:
“Steffen took over the team during a difficult period and managed to bring stability and clarity. The developments of the past few months show that we are on the right track. We see every day how united everyone is, both on and off the pitch. That’s why we are convinced that we will continue down this path together.”
The length of Baumgart’s new contract remains unknown as the Berliners decide not to reveal the length of contracts.
Union’s record under Baumgart:
Since taking charge of Union, Baumgart has averaged 1.37 points per game. This puts him behind former head coach Urs Fischer, who averaged 1.53 ppg, but only marginally behind Uwe Neuhaus, who spent seven years at the helm between 2007 and 2014 in East Berlin and averaged 1.48 ppg.
