Bundesliga matchday 16 review: Bayern Munich score 8, capital comebacks, epic draws, and more

The Bundesliga is back with a bang! Despite two fixtures (Werder Bremen vs Hoffenheim and St. Pauli vs RB Leipzig) being cancelled due to heavy snow fall, we still witnessed 35 goals across 7 matches. For the first time in 2026, here is your matchday review from the Bundesliga.

‘Eight’ to be Wolfsburg

On Sunday evening evening, Bayern Munich reannounced themselves to the league with an almighty hammering as they ran out 8-1 winners against VfL Wolfsburg.

There were six different goalscorers for Bayern, not including the two own goals scored by VfL defenders. It was Michael Olise who stole the show, scoring a brace and unlucky not to get his hattrick.

The winger, with that trademark inverted run, is almost unstoppable in those situations. Many have drawn comparisons to Arjen Robben and the similarities in that particular run are striking. However, head coach Vincent Kompany prefers not to draw comparisons but to let Oilse be his own player.

The goal of the night however fell to Harry Kane. Scoring Bayern’s sixth on the night, you felt it was only a matter of time before he got in on the act. The Englishman picked up the ball on the left-hand-side of the box, cut the ball onto his right foot, and curled the ball into the top corner – kissing the crossbar as it went in.

Kane’s 20th Bundesliga goal this season was one of his best and also means that he is the first person since Timo Konietzka to score at least 20 goals in their first three Bundesliga seasons – the original record stretching back six decades.

For Wolfsburg, it’s a shocking start to the new year. What’s more, the fact that VfL defenders Kilian Fischer and Moritz Jenz scored own-goals meant that the Lower Saxon Autostädter have now scored four own goals in the current campaign; also a worst-ever season total. Additionally, never before in Bundesliga history has a team scored four own-goals in three consecutive matches. When your luck is out, it’s well and truly out.

Frankfurt & Dortmund Share Six Goal Thriller

The weekend was officially kicked off on Friday evening when Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund played out a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The visitors struck first after 10 minutes when Nico Schlotterbeck played a diagonal pass into the path of Julian Ryerson, who in turn drilled in a brilliant cross for Maximilian Beier to neatly send the ball past Kauã Santos’ at the near post. Frankfurt rallied as they looked for an immediate reply and soon found themselves gifted a golden chance to equalise when Serhou Guirassy needlessly fouled Robin Koch in the Dortmund box. Can Uzun made no mistake from the spot.

Dortmund retook the lead on 67 minutes when Felix Nmecha let fly from 20 yards, his strike taking a significant deflection off Hugo Larsson before finding its way into the back of the net. Frankfurt responded immediately as Arnaud Kalimuendo turned his marker with ease and slipped Ebnoutalib through on goal, the debutant firing brilliantly past Kobel. Jubilation followed for Eintracht a minute later after more excellent work from Kalimuendo forced Ryerson into a hurried clearance. The ball fell straight into the path of former Dortmund midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, who emphatically fired past Kobel.

BVB threw men forward in search of an equaliser and delivered a punch to the hosts’ gut with virtually the last kick of the game. Sabitzer’s cross was met by substitute Carney Chukwuemeka, who brought the ball under control before slotting past Santos.

A pulsating game to welcome back the Bundesliga in 2026 ended with both sides having to settle for a point apiece.

Union Stage Dramatic Comeback

It was a miracle that Union Berlin’s game against Mainz 05 went ahead on Saturday. All credit to the Union faithful who took to the stadium prior to the game to make the surrounding areas safe for travel.

With the return of former head coach Urs Fischer, the home crowd were serenading before kick off with chats of “Fußballgott!”

However, with 70 minutes on the clock, you’d imagine many of the Union fans wished they hadn’t bothered. Mainz were in complete control, winning the game 0-2 thanks to goals from Nadiem Amiri and former Union player Benedict Hollerbach – who elected not to celebrate his goal.

However, Steffen Baumgart’s substitutes would prove to be the difference.  Jeong Woo-yeong pulled one back in the 77th minute with a fantastic header into the far post. The South Korean used the pace of the cross and just delicately directly into the path of the far corner.

The comeback was then complete four minutes from time thanks to another substitute and headed effort on goal. Marin Ljubičić rose the highest in a crowded penalty box, before heading the ball onto the crossbar and just over the line.

It was looking to be a brilliant away day for Mainz, but a draw  was probably the correct scoreline in the end.

Around The Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, we were treated to a Sebastian Hoeneß masterclass as VfB Stuttgart ran out 1-4 winners away at Bayer Leverkusen. 0-4 up at halftime, Leverkusen simply had zero answers to Stuttgart’s pressing tactics. Jamie Leweling the star of the day, scoring a brace on his 100th Bundesliga match. The win now means that 3rd-5th are now all on 29 points.

SC Freiburg left it late to secure a 2-1 home win against Hamburger SV. HSV took the lead, but minutes later were down to ten men and level having given a penalty away. Igor Matanović then scored late to give the homeside all three points. HSV still await their first three points on the road this season.

There was also an emphatic win for Borussia Mönchengladbach who beat FC Augsburg 4-0 at Borussia Park. The three points lifting Gladbach into a much-more healthier 10th position.

Elsewhere, FC Heidenheim and FC Köln shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw. Heidenheim’s Marvin Pieringer with the opener and one of the goals of the season.

The Bundesliga reconvines on Tuesday and Wednesday for a bit of midweek madness. We hope to see you there!
