Wolfsburg set new Bundesliga record with four own goals in three matches

As many might have expected, VfL Wolfsburg’s 8-1 away defeat against Bayern Munich on Sunday was historically bad. Germany’s green company team – in addition to setting two unwanted club records – have helped the Bundesliga reach a new low.

The loss officially constituted Wolfsburg worst-ever defeat in the Bundesliga. The fact that VfL defenders Kilian Fischer and Moritz Jenz scored own-goals meant that the Lower Saxon Autostädter have now scored four own goals in the current campaign; also a worst-ever season total.

Matters get worse when one takes into account the fact that Wolfsburg defenders are on a horrible “own-goal-scoring” streak. Konstantinos Koulierakis scored an own goal in the matchday 14 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Koulierakis’ central defensive partner Jenson Seelt scored an own-goal in the matchday 15 defeat against SC Freiburg. Now that Jenz and Fischer have put the ball into the back of their own net on matchday 16, Wolfsburg have become experts in defeating themselves.

Never before in Bundesliga history has a team scored four own-goals in three consecutive matches. Two new club appointees – new sporting director Pirmin Schwegler and newly installed permanent head coach Daniel Bauer – had some serious apologizing to do.

Fischer got in on the act too.

Wolfsburg professionals apologize to their fans

You can’t collapse like we just did,” Fischer told German broadcaster DAZN. “This is really embarrassing. Unfortunately, we don’t have much time to process it. We have to dust ourselves off and go full throttle against St. Pauli [on Wednesday].

This was a total failure,” Schwegler said in his DAZN interview. “One can’t survive in the Bundesliga like this, not without defending.

The [own-goals] are just a matter of bad luck,” Bauer added at the post-match press conference. “I don’t want to criticize the boys. I’m more concerned with apologizing to our fans who went through a lot of effort to support us in this weather.
