Versatile Barcelona star reveals preferred position – ‘Perhaps more exposed’
Barcelona man Eric Garcia started off last season as a defender, but increasingly has become an all-rounder under Hansi Flick. Initially getting his break in the side in midfield last January, Garcia has been an ever-present for Barcelona this year, but has moved positions regularly.
Initially beginning the season at right-back and performing well, Garcia then had a spell in central defence alongside Pau Cubarsi, as Flick tested out his options there. Over the last two months, he has been employed primarily in midfield, giving Frenkie de Jong a run for his position.
On Wednesday, he was back in central defence as Barcelona ran out 5-0 winners over Athletic Club in the Spanish Supercup semi-final. Speaking to Marca after the game, Garcia was asked on his preferences.
“Every position has its differences and challenges. I’ve played center back, right back, and midfielder. But at the back, you’re perhaps more exposed. I prefer playing center back and full back because that’s where I’ve played the most, but I’m feeling more and more comfortable in midfield.”
🚨 FC Barcelona are rubbing their hands seeing how Roony Bardghji has acclimatized at the club. He's showing real good stuff in the few amount of minutes he's getting, and his behavior is also exemplary. It should be reminded that the Swedish winger joined for just €2.5m.…

Garcia on Hansi Flick and a leadership role
Part of the reason Garcia has been so consistently in the line-up is his ability to interpret the game, and he explained that it was an interest of his more generally.
“I really like football, tactics… if I’m on the pitch I’m also paying attention to that. I try to see what the opponent is doing and what we are doing.”
Garcia has gone from strength to strength under Flick, following a successful loan spell under Michel Sanchez at Girona. It was the German’s personable nature that stood out above all though, when asked for his best quality.

“His close relationship with the players. He’s always there to talk to you. He has excellent management skills in the dressing room. You can always talk to him.”
Eric Garcia’s favourite Barcelona match
Quizzed on a favourite Barcelona match he has played in, he selected a decisive El Clasico in La Liga last season.
“The match against Real Madrid, at home. It came after the defeat against Inter, which hurt us. We started badly, but it was a great match. It was special. So was the one we played against Benfica last season.”
The Blaugrana went 2-0 down early on to Real Madrid, but Garcia began the comeback with a header from a corner. Barcelona went on to win it 4-3, with Garcia putting in a strong performance against Vinicius Junior at right-back.
