American attacker Cole Campbell’s reported on loan out from Borussia Dortmund to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has been officially confirmed. Westphalia’s Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper reports that Hoffenheim have paid Campbell’s Bundesliga parent club a loan fee of €1.5m as part of the transaction.

A purchase option is also part of the deal. 

How much is Cole Campbell’s purchase option?

Reports on the precise nature of the purchase option differ. RN claims that Hoffenheim can acquire Campbell permanently for a fixed fee of €10m while Kicker and others speak of a base-fee of €7m that can rise higher with bonuses. Sport1 goes so far as to suggest that the purchase option is as high as €12m.

In any event, it appears as if Dortmund have made it easy enough for Hoffenheim to take the 19-year-old off their hands if they wish to. Campbell has been dropped from Niko Kovac’s matchday squad selections recently due to lack of effort in training. The teenager has made just one Bundesliga appearance this season. 

Words on Campbell’s move

“Cole is a very talented winger with great developmental potential,” TSG sporting director Andreas Schicker noted in a club statement. “We have been monitoring him closely for quite some time. He has great pace, strong one-on-one qualities, and exhibits great versatility as an attacker on both flanks. We are convinced that he can provide our team with some fresh impetus.”

“Cole is a young player with a lot of potential, but – for various reasons – he has not been able to demonstrate it recently,” BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl added. “He has high expectations of himself and was unhappy with his current role. That is another reason why we agreed to this loan and believe that he will get more playing time at TSG during the second half of the season. We wish him every success.”
