Jose Mourinho offers himself to Chelsea after Enzo Maresca sack

SL Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly offered his services to Chelsea, with the Blues scouring the market for a new head coach after sacking Enzo Maresca.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jose Mourinho may seal a shock return to Chelsea if he has his way. The Blues are scouring the managerial market for a replacement for Enzo Maresca after parting ways with the Italian tactician. So, the 62-year-old former Manchester United manager has offered his services to the West London club.

Jose Mourinho and his career so far

Jose Mourinho has become a shell of the manager he once was, with his latest project ending in only 12 months. While the Setubal native is one of the greatest managers of all time, he has been on a downward spiral in the last half a dozen years, although he is on a promising resurgent run with SL Benfica.

The 62-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with FC Porto, guiding the Portuguese giants to a surprise UEFA Champions League triumph. After that, Mourinho experienced success with Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. He also won a European trophy with AS Roma.

However, the Portuguese tactician no longer remains a hot property in the managerial market, particularly after an underwhelming spell with Fenerbahce. That may change soon, as the latest report has revealed that Mourinho is seeking a return to Chelsea a decade after leaving the West London club for the second time.

Stamford Bridge return soon?

It will be surprising to see Chelsea opt for Jose Mourinho after parting ways with Enzo Maresca. While the Blues are scouring the market for a new head coach, BlueCo’s preference has been to appoint a young manager who does not have run-ins with the hierarchy and toes the line. That has become more apparent after Maresca’s departure, as the Italian tactician was unhappy with things behind the scenes.

As for Maresca’s replacement, several candidates, including Oliver Glasner, have emerged on the West London club’s wishlist. However, as iterated earlier, it will be surprising to see Mourinho back at Chelsea, as he does not fit the blueprint of a head coach under BlueCo.

Meanwhile, this speculation may all prove needless, as widespread reports have revealed that Liam Rosenior is the front-runner to become the next Chelsea boss. As for Mourinho, with the 62-year-old Portuguese tactician making his mark after returning to Benfica, he will likely remain with the Primeira Liga giants for the foreseeable future.
