Jean-Philippe Mateta contract talks with Crystal Palace stall
Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and West Ham United have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Jean-Philippe Mateta.
According to Ekrem Konur, Crystal Palace have suffered a blow in their hopes of keeping hold of Jean-Philippe Mateta as contract renewal talks have reached a standstill. With renewal talks not going as planned, interest in his services is at an all-time high.
Clubs like Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and West Ham United are all keen on signing the 28-year-old if and when he is made available.
Mateta has only gone from strength to strength since joining Palace from FSV Mainz at the start of 2021. While it was an initial loan deal, the move was made permanent in 2022.
The 28-year-old French striker was one of the standout performers for Palace last season as he finished with 21 goal contributions. He has carried that form into the new campaign and has nine goals and two assists so far.
Palace struggle to renew Mateta’s contract
His performances haven’t gone unnoticed, as some of the biggest clubs in England are keen on his signature. While Palace will be reluctant to lose one of their most important players, they might not have too many options to play with as his contract is running out.
He only has 18 months left on his current deal, and renewal talks haven’t gone according to plan for the Eagles. With extension talks stalling, Palace have serious concerns about his future. They might be forced to listen to offers for him in 2026, as they wouldn’t want to lose out on him for free in 2027.
Premier League giants to battle for Mateta
Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and West Ham are all keen on his signature. Unai Emery is looking for someone who can compete with Ollie Watkins for a place in the XI. United seek more quality in the final third, and with Joshua Zirkzee’s future uncertain, Mateta is seen as an ideal replacement.
Newcastle might have signed two forwards last summer, but with Yoane Wissa struggling to stay fit, Mateta could be an interesting option for them. As far as the Hammers are concerned, they lack quality as well as firepower in the final third, and a proven Premier League star like Mateta could certainly help their cause.
With all four clubs keen, and renewal talks with Palace not going as planned, Mateta could be on the move to a bigger club in the near future.
