West Ham United in transfer tussle to sign Christos Mandas

West Ham United will reportedly look to sign 24-year-old Greek international Christos Mandas from Serie A club Lazio in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by La Lazio Siamo Noi, Christos Mandas is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the winter transfer window. So, the 24-year-old Lazio shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the East London outfit.

West Ham United and Bournemouth have submitted enquiries over a possible move for the Piraeus native. However, the two Premier League clubs will face stiff competition from Getafe and Fiorentina for Mandas’s signature, with the former already submitting an offer to sign the 2001-born goalkeeper.

Who is Christos Mandas?

Christos Mandas has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining SS Lazio from OFI Crete FC in September 2023. The 24-year-old has primarily been a backup goalkeeper for the Serie A club in the last two and a half years, although he briefly usurped Ivan Provedel as the first-choice shot-stopper in the 2024/25 season.

The Greek international has made 32 appearances thus far for Lazio while conceding 27 goals and keeping 12 clean sheets. However, Mandas has become the backup goalkeeper this season, with Maurizio Sarri yet to hand him a game this term. Meanwhile, the player’s stock in the market is high, with West Ham United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

What next?

West Ham United’s interest in Christos Mandas is understandable. The Hammers are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the winter transfer window, as Mads Hermansen has been dreadful since arriving from Leicester City this past summer. Meanwhile, Alphonse Areola is on the wrong side of 30, and Lukasz Fabianski is in the twilight of his career.

Recent reports have claimed that West Ham will cash in on Hermansen in the winter transfer window. So, the East London outfit will return to the market for a goalkeeper in January, making Mandas a viable target. They have already submitted an enquiry over a possible move.

However, West Ham will not be alone in the race to sign Mandas, as Bournemouth, Getafe, and Fiorentina are also keen on signing the 2001-born Greek goalkeeper. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 24-year-old Lazio shot-stopper.
