Sporting CP uninterested in selling Morten Hjulmand in January

Sporting CP will not entertain bids to part ways with 26-year-old Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand in the winter transfer window amid his links with Premier League clubs.

According to a report by Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Morten Hjulmand. The two Premier League bigwigs are eager to bolster their first-team squads by signing a solid midfielder in the winter transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP mainstay has emerged as a target.

However, a winter move will not materialise, as Sporting CP will not entertain bids to part ways with the Dane in the coming weeks. While suitors can take the matter out of the Portuguese club’s hands due to his release clause of €80 million, the Primeira Liga champions “feel secure” about the situation, as they feel that nobody will pay that in January.

How has Morten Hjulmand fared for Sporting CP?

Morten Hjulmand has established himself as one of the world’s best holding midfielders since joining Sporting CP from US Lecce in August 2023. The 26-year-old hit the ground running at the Portuguese club, with Ruben Amorim bringing the best out of him. The Manchester United manager also installed him as the club captain.

The Danish international has made over 100 appearances thus far for Sporting CP, chipping in with nine goals and seven assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the winter transfer window.

Will Hjulmand move to the Premier League soon?

Manchester United wanted to sign Morten Hjulmand in the summer transfer window, but the deal did not materialise. The continued interest makes sense, as Casemiro is approaching the twilight of his career. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte has struggled to make his mark since joining Manchester United from PSG last year. So, Hjulmand has emerged as a viable target.

As for Tottenham Hotspur, Yves Bissouma has no future at the North London club, with a January exit on the cards. So, the Lilywhites will dip their toes in the market for a holding midfielder in the winter transfer window, with Hjulmand an option worth considering. However, Sporting CP will not entertain bids to part ways with the 26-year-old Dane in the coming weeks.

While suitors can take the matter out of the Portuguese club’s hands due to his release clause of €80 million, the Primeira Liga champions “feel secure” about the situation, as they feel that nobody will pay that in January. So, Manchester United and Tottenham must wait until the summer to sign the Danish international.
