Takefusa Kubo unlikely to leave Real Sociedad in January

Tottenham Hotspur must wait until the summer transfer window to sign 24-year-old Japanese international Takefusa Kubo from La Liga club Real Sociedad.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Takefusa Kubo is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are keen on bolstering their offensive unit by signing a wide attacker next year. So, the 24-year-old Real Sociedad winger has emerged as a target for the North London outfit.

The latest report has revealed that the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners are ready to pay £54 million to sign the former Real Madrid winger. However, while that is an attractive fee for Real Sociedad, La Real will unlikely entertain any bids to part ways with Kubo in the winter transfer window as they aim to avoid a disastrous campaign.

Takefusa Kubo and his time in La Liga

Takefusa Kubo has made considerable progress since joining Real Sociedad from Real Madrid in July 2022. While the 24-year-old winger should have been more productive than he has been in the last three years, he has established himself as a pivotal figure for the Basque outfit, with Sergio Francisco valuing him highly.

The Japanese international has made nearly 150 appearances thus far for Real Sociedad while chipping in with 24 goals and 18 assists. Meanwhile, Kubo’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Tottenham Hotspur will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the winter transfer window.

London calling?

Takefusa Kubo has been on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, as the North London giants are yet to replace Son Heung-min properly. The South Korean international called time on his illustrious stint at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window, and Spurs’ wide attackers have not been impressive this term.

While filling Son’s void with a like-for-like replacement may be a tall order, the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners view Kubo as a viable target. Additionally, Tottenham must scour the market for a versatile attacker if they part ways with Richarlison next year. So, Kubo is an option worth considering. However, the former Real Madrid winger will unlikely leave Real Sociedad in January.

While the Lilywhites are ready to pay around £54 million to sign Kubo, Real Sociedad will be eager to keep hold of the player to rescue a potentially disastrous season. So, while recent reports have suggested that the opportunity to join Tottenham appeals to the 24-year-old Japanese international, the North London outfit must wait until the summer to secure his services.
