Newcastle United and Sunderland keen on Matteo Guendouzi
Newcastle United and Sunderland are interested in bringing Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi back to the Premier League.
Matteo Guendouzi hasn’t had the best of times at Lazio of late, and it has resulted in a lot of talk about his future. With the Italian club struggling financially, the French midfielder could be moved on to help balance their books.
The former Arsenal star could be gearing up for a return to the Premier League. According to Corriere dello Sport via SportWitness, Newcastle United and Sunderland are both keen on signing the 26-year-old.
Guendouzi joined Lazio in the summer of 2023 from French club Marseille. While it was an initial loan move, his impressive performances ensured that the move became permanent.
He was an integral part of their first team last season. He ended up making 48 appearances across competitions and even contributed towards six goals. The 26-year-old was one of their standout performers.
While he has started the majority of their league games this season and even has two goal contributions, Guendouzi seems to have lost momentum in recent weeks. The French international hasn’t adapted well to new boss Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation.
Following his struggles, there has been a lot of talk about his future. With Lazio struggling financially, they could look to cash in on the former Arsenal star amidst interest from Newcastle and Sunderland. While Sarri is keen on having him around, the Italian club are unlikely to turn down any significant offer for him.
Guendouzi could return to the Premier League
While they would prefer a summer departure, they won’t mind a winter window as long as the offer meets their demands. Sunderland have been on fire since their return to the top flight. They are currently fourth in the Premier League, and in order to strengthen their chances of securing a European spot, they want to bolster their squad.
They want more control in midfield, and the versatile Guendouzi can certainly help their cause. Meanwhile, Newcastle have been struggling to get going, and they feel the experienced midfield star could play a big role in getting them back on track.
He is currently valued at €25-30 million, which suggests the finances might not be that big a headache for the English club
