Liverpool ready to sign Nico Schlotterbeck on a bargain

Liverpool could have a passage towards Nico Schlotterbeck and sign the Borussia Dortmund defender on a cut-price deal next summer.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool could potentially land Nico Schlotterbeck on a bargain deal next summer. The Reds have earmarked a top-rated centre-back as a priority in future windows, and the Borussia Dortmund star’s contractual situation could see them land him for a lower fee than initially anticipated.

Liverpool may have had a monumental summer window, but they did leave it short when it comes to shoring up their defensive setup. Marc Guehi was close to joining them on deadline day, before Crystal Palace pulled the plug after complications over at Selhurst Park with regards to signing a replacement.

While there have been significant doubts over their clear-cut chances of signing Guehi in future windows, Liverpool did consider Nico Schlotterbeck as an alternative. However, over the last few weeks, they have begun seeing him as a key addition to their side that lacks a left-footed centre-back.

Schlotterbeck’s contractual situation at Borussia Dortmund has attracted plenty of other suitors, with Bayern Munich one of those interested. The 25-year-old Bundesliga star is entering the final 18 months of his deal at the club, and could potentially leave the team on a cut-price deal with a year left next summer.

Liverpool are one among many teams interested in Schlotterbeck, with the Reds now in with a chance to sign him on a bargain deal next summer. The Maerseysiders could wait on and make a compelling offer to the 25-year-old Bundesliga star’s camp to get a deal in place.

Nico Schlotterbeck is a good fit for Liverpool

Liverpool faces competition for Schlotterbeck and will be active in the race. Should they win the 25-year-old Bundesliga star’s signature, the German international could be a good fit for the team in the present and long-term future. They have lacked a left-footed centre-back for years, and with Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, he could be a long-term replacement for the skipper.

At the moment, if Liverpool do end up signing Schlotterbeck next summer, he might be viewed as a direct replacement for Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchman is currently deciding his future, as Real Madrid are emerging as the favourites to land him on a Bosman deal next summer.
