Newcastle United, West Ham United vying for James Garner

Newcastle United and West Ham United are both interested in signing Everton star James Garner, with both clubs preparing moves for him in January.

Newcastle United and West Ham United are both looking for options to strengthen their respective midfields. According to Ekrem Konur, both Premier League clubs have their eyes set on Everton’s James Garner. They could end up making a move in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Garner was a part of the Manchester United youth setup back in the day. He got promoted to their first team back in 2020. After multiple loan spells away from the club, he ended up joining the Merseyside club in the summer of 2022.

The young defensive midfielder has been an integral part of the Toffees’ first team over the years. He has been involved in 97 matches for Everton and has even contributed towards eight goals.

While he prefers playing as a defensive midfielder, the United graduate is capable enough to feature anywhere in midfield. He remains one of the first names on the team sheet, but his future has become a massive talking point because of his contract situation.

The 24-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and as things stand, he doesn’t appear too keen on signing a new deal. With the possibility of him leaving as a free agent, several top clubs have expressed strong interest in securing his services.

Premier League clubs are after Garner’s signature

While Manchester United were also linked with the Everton star, the Red Devils are not considering bringing him back to the club. Newcastle United and West Ham United are believed to be front-runners for his signature.

Both clubs consider the versatile midfielder an ideal fit for their project, and they could either look to sign him for a bargain in the winter window or wait until the summer to secure his services for free.

Eddie Howe wants more depth in midfield, given the number of injuries Newcastle have suffered of late. Meanwhile, West Ham find themselves in the relegation zone and are looking to add more quality in hopes of avoiding the drop.

Garner can certainly help their cause, but it will be interesting to see if Everton are open to a mid-season transfer or if they are willing to risk losing him for free while they continue to work on a potential renewal.
