Inter Player Ratings vs Fiorentina: Calhanoglu Too Hot to Handle
Inter Milan put Fiorentina to the sword in Wednesday’s Serie A clash at San Siro, cruising to a dominant 3-0 victory. Despite failing to score before halftime, Cristian Chivu’s charges secured an emphatic triumph to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat at Napoli.
Veteran goalkeeper David de Gea rolled back the years, making two outstanding saves in the first half. Indeed, the Spanish star denied Alessandro Bastoni from point-blank range before pulling off a fabulous stop to deny Federico Dimarco’s volley.
However, it was only a matter of time before Inter would find the opener. Chivu’s side needed a moment of brilliance to break down Fiorentina’s low block, and Hakan Calhanoglu answered the call. The 31-year-old midfielder unleashed a rocket missile from long range to draw first blood in the 66th minute.
Only five minutes later, summer signing Petar Sucic scored his first goal in the Nerazzurri shirt to put clear daylight between the sides. Calhanoglu then landed a knockout blow on La Viola, converting yet another penalty to cap off Inter’s scintillating win.
Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.
Inter (3-5-2)
Yann Sommer – 7/10
With Fiorentina spending most of the game behind the ball, the Swiss keeper had a quiet night. However, he still had to make two saves to help Inter keep only their third clean sheet across their last 11 home league matches.
Manuel Akanji – 7/10
The Manchester City loanee made light work of Albert Gudmundsson, using his sophisticated game sense and excellent positioning to keep the Icelandic forward at bay. Calm and collected in possession.
Yann Bisseck – 8/10
It was a dream return to the starting line-up for the German center-back, who excelled against Moise Kean, beating the Italian striker in virtually every one-on-one duel.
Alessandro Bastoni – 7/10
Like his defensive colleagues, Bastoni had a field day against a downtrodden Fiorentina frontline. But it’s a shame he failed to score in the first half after making a superb interception.
Federico Dimarco – 7/10
Though De Gea kept him off the scoresheet with a stunning leg save, the offensive-minded fullback finally showed glimpses of his old form. Omnipresent in attack!
Nicolo Barella – 4/10
It’s hard to remember the last time the diminutive midfielder made so many erratic passes. It was not his night by any stretch of the imagination.
Hakan Calhanoglu – 9/10
In stark contrast to Barella’s dismal performance, the Turkish superstar was unstoppable, dictating the tempo, delivering precise passes, and scoring twice, including an all-important long-range screamer.
Petar Sucic – 8/10
The Croatian starlet scored a remarkable first goal at San Siro, shrugging off Rolando Mandragora before humiliating Pietro Comuzzo and scoring with aplomb. He was nothing short of exceptional this evening!
Denzel Dumfries – 6/10
The Dutch wingback is always flirting with the goal, but De Gea denied him his second Serie A goal this season with a massive save.
Lautaro Martinez – 6/10
El Toro was heavily involved in the build-up play and fought tooth and nail for every ball, yet he never had a clear sight of goal.
Francesco Pio Esposito – 7/10
Only referee Simone Sozza knows how the Italian prodigy didn’t draw two penalties for his side. His spatial awareness and team play were incredible.
