Didi Hamann suggests Bayern Munich accelerated Vincent Kompany renewal due to possible Manchester City move

Didi Hamann believes interest from Manchester City could be the reason Bayern Munich decided to accelerate Vincent Kompany’s contract renewal.

Bayern Munich recently secured the long-term future of their manager, Vincent Kompany, with a new deal earlier this week. His previous contract ran until the summer of 2027, but his new deal will see him stay at the German club until 2029.

Given the kind of impact he has had since taking charge in the summer of 2024, Bayern have rewarded him for the work he has done and at the same time, they have secured his future amidst potential interest from his former club Manchester City.

Hamann on why Bayern extended Kompany’s contract

Didi Hamann suggests Bayern rushed with the new deal because they feel City would be interested in him at some point in time. With Pep Guardiola’s long-term future uncertain, Kompany could have become a potential option to replace him. As a result, they have used a contract extension to ward off potential interest from the Premier League giants.

In his column for , the Bayern Munich legend said: “FC Bayern extended Kompany’s contract until 2029, even though he still had 20 months left on his contract. I mean, the extension wasn’t a must, but I understand why they did it,”

“Bayern probably have in mind that Manchester City will be interested in Kompany at some point when Pep Guardiola retires.

“It would be interesting to know if Kompany has a clause in his contract. Christoph Freund didn’t reveal anything about that on Wednesday evening, but he didn’t completely deny it either.”

Kompany’s appointment at Bayern came as a surprise to many, as he didn’t have the best of track records at Burnley. However, the German giants decided to back him, and he didn’t let them down. The 39-year-old helped them reclaim the league title and also won the DFL Supercup in his first season in charge.

Kompany commits his future to Bayern for now

On the back of his impressive work, Bayern have handed him a new deal, but they certainly did rush into it as there was still a significant amount of time left on his previous contract. They have publicly backed their manager, who has led the German giants to a sensational start in the new season. The Bundesliga giants have won all 12 of their games across competitions.

Hamann feels Bayern have moved quickly to secure his future as they feel City could try to lure him in the future. With Pep Guardiola likely to end his stint at the English club in the near future, Kompany could have been the perfect replacement.

While they have secured his future for the time being, it will be interesting to see if the new deal includes any clause that might help him return to his former club when the time comes.
