Thibaut Courtois gives lengthy takedown of La Liga President – ‘If it’s the best league in the world…’

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has given a lengthy response to La Liga President Javier Tebas ahead following the latter’s lament over what he called a missed opportunity to take La Liga to the USA. Real Madrid have been in opposition to the idea, claiming it corrupts the home and away format of the competition.

Ahead of Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Juventus, Courtois also opined on the idea of hosting Villarreal-Barcelona in Miami, explaining that he felt it did corrupt the competition. He was also critical of Tebas personally for his social media activity, and the censorship of the players’ protest against the organisation of the game.

‘There are many other things to improve first’ – Courtois

After the match, Courtois spoke to the media again, with 48 hours having passed, and promoters Relevent cancelling the plans. Courtois told Marca that Tebas needed to take care of his product in Spain first before exporting it across the globe.

“I’m satisfied, in that it didn’t make sense, to do it without transparency because the games have to be played at your home, as I said yesterday. It’s common sense. If it’s done in the future, all the clubs should vote together. Everyone has to be in favour. I think if the Spanish league and its brand are good and you believe it’s the best league in the world, you don’t have to go elsewhere to play games.”

“There are many other things to improve first. You have to have your stadiums full. Financial Fair Play is good, but in the end, many clubs are selling their best players to comply. It’s not normal that in September there are teams performing miracles to register players. That’s the first thing that has to change and improve.”

‘We play enough games in the USA’ – Courtois

Courtois also explained that he felt that the preseason games in the United States were more than sufficient exposure for Spanish clubs.

“Also if you look at it, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico, even Betis have been to Mexico, I’ve seen Leganes there, we play games in the US. That’s what preseason is for. There are other things to improve first in order your image.”

Tebas’ response to cancelled Miami game

After the game was cancelled, Tebas put out on social media that he felt it was a missed opportunity to continue the growth of the league abroad. He also noted that none of the bodies involved had prevented the game from happening on the basis that it would have corrupted the competition.
