Monaco targeting Reims’ Abdoul Koné for joker transfer

According to a report from L’Équipe, Monaco are targeting a move for Reims’ Abdoul Koné (20) as they eye up a potential joker transfer to bolster their defensive options. Les Monégasques have suffered injuries in central defence; most recently, former Tottenham defender Eric Dier has been ruled out of action for the foreseeable future.

New head coach Sébastien Pocognoli also prefers to play with a three-back system and doesn’t have the players at his disposal to execute his tactical plan. The Reims defender is seen as a potential option for the Principality club. Negotiations have begun between the two clubs as Monaco look to bring Koné to the Stade Louis II.

Koné in demand

The 20-year-old was targeted by Marseille during the summer transfer window, but a deal could not be agreed. Despite the interest shown by the Ligue 1 club, the second division outfit are unlikely to let their academy graduate leave easily, as he has become a major part of their push to be promoted back to the French top flight.
