Kasper Hjulmand analyses Bayer Leverkusen defeat against PSG: “We lost the game in 7 minutes.”

Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first defeat under Kasper Hjulmand, losing 2-7 against Paris-Saint Germain. With the game level at 1-1, the Dane analysed a seven minute spell in which the game was lost.

Speaking to Prime Video, Hjulmand said: “We lost the game in seven minutes. Maybe we would have lost it anyway. But the way we managed those minutes wasn’t the best.”

He’s referring to Ernest Poku and Claudio Echeverri losing the ball in key areas, which resulted in PSG counter-attacks with the Parisiens making it 1-2 and 1-3 in quick succession. Désiré Doué then scored a third – the Frenchman’s second – in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half, in the same seven minute spell.

A new system for Bayer Leverkusen

But despite the heavy defeat, Hjulmand defended his players, noting that Bayer played a system that they had not practised. He’s referring to the 4-4-1 following Robert Andrich’s sending off after 33 minutes.
