John McGinn in talks to sign new Aston Villa contract, future Celtic move possible

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are looking to secure the long-term future of John McGinn with a new deal, but a future move to Celtic still remains a possibility.

Celtic have a long-standing interest in John McGinn. The Scottish giants were on the verge of signing him seven years back, and they have now returned for his signature, as his future at Aston Villa has looked increasingly uncertain since the start of the summer.

McGinn was heavily linked with a move away from the club throughout the summer window, and Villa have certainly done a great job to keep hold of their 31-year-old midfield mainstay. According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, the Birmingham-based club are now looking to secure his long-term future with a new and improved deal.

Celtic are keen on signing John McGinn

While a new contract looks almost certain, Celtic’s interest could change things up and convince the Scottish international to return to his home country. The Bhoys had a deal in place to sign McGinn back in 2018 before he joined Aston Villa.

John McGinn ended up joining the Premier League club instead. The 31-year-old has since gone from strength to strength and is currently one of their most important players. While his contract runs until the summer of 2027, his future was a massive talking point during the summer. Aston Villa want to sort things out with a new deal, but Celtic are keen on finally bringing him to Glasgow, and emotional ties with the player could work in their favour.

McGinn won’t return to Scotland just yet

However, Pete O’Rourke seems to have a slightly different take on his situation. He believes John McGinn will end up signing an extension at Aston Villa, but a future move to Celtic still can’t be ruled out.

While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, the transfer expert said, “I will be surprised if it was to happen anytime soon. It could happen in the future, there’s no doubt about that. There are strong links between John McGinn and Celtic.

“I think his granddad was Celtic chairman at one point as well. Got to remember, he came very close to moving to Celtic before he joined Villa in 2018. The deal to Celtic was almost done before it stalled and Villa obviously swooped in and the rest is history.

“There’s a deep connection between John McGinn and Celtic, but I don’t think John McGinn will be considering a move back up to Scotland any time soon. You can never rule out a move in the future. I’m sure it’s a move that might pull on his heartstrings in the future.”

Celtic share a very strong bond with John McGinn and his family. As a result, he can surely be seen playing for them in the future, but O’Rourke is almost certain that it won’t happen anytime soon. The 31-year-old still has a lot of football left in him, and with Villa keen on handing him a new deal, he will most likely put pen to paper.
