Liverpool set to submit enquiry for Dayot Upamecano winter move
Arne Slot’s Liverpool are all set to make a formal approach for Real Madrid defensive target Dayot Upamecano in the winter window.
According to Dean Jones via TEAMtalk, Liverpool could make a move for Dayot Upamecano in the upcoming winter transfer window as they look to add more quality and depth to their backline. With the Bayern Munich defensive mainstay potentially available for free next summer, the Reds are pushing hard for his signature.
Upamecano made a name for himself at RB Leipzig before joining Bayern in the summer of 2021. He has only gone from strength to strength since and has been a constant feature in their XI over the years.
While he remains an integral part of Vincent Kompany’s team, his future is up in the air because of his contract situation. The 26-year-old’s current deal runs out at the end of the season. While Bayern are working hard to extend his stay at the club, they have yet to reach an agreement.
If the French international doesn’t pen a new deal before the turn of the calendar, multiple top clubs could look to strike a deal. Liverpool are one of the clubs that could look to secure a pre-agreement in the winter window.
Dean Jones on Upamecano leaving Bayern
While speaking about Upamecano’s future, Jones said: “If there is no agreement on a Bayern deal by the New Year, then Liverpool are expected to more formally show their interest in the player.
“They would need to move quickly because they are not the only club with eyes on him, Real Madrid also have half an eye on him at the moment.
“These three clubs are very much looking to sort out a similar problem for next season, so the same names keep circulating between them.
“A lot of the situation will be led by Liverpool’s own need for a new centre-back, with no new deal for Konate sorted yet.
“It remains the case that Madrid very much want him as part of their project that sees them targeting top players as their contracts wind down.
“Madrid seem convinced that Konate is interested – the stories surrounding them are not just speculation.
“I’m not sure how much Liverpool fans would care about Konate leaving if they can land one of their top targets.”
Real Madrid are also keen on Upamecano’s signature, as they look to prepare for life without David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, who are in the final year of their deals. With Los Blancos keen on his signature, the Merseyside club will have to rush to sign the 26-year-old.
Upamecano could replace Konate at Liverpool
The Merseyside club are looking for a new centre-back amidst uncertainty around Ibrahima Konate’s future. He is in the final year of his contract and doesn’t seem keen on extending his stay at the club.
The Liverpool mainstay has been heavily linked with a move to Los Blancos. The Reds want to bring in a top-level replacement in case of his potential departure, and they consider his compatriot Upamecano the perfect fit for their system.
If the 26-year-old, who currently earns €10 million per year, doesn’t commit to a new deal in the coming months, Liverpool are expected to make a formal approach. Sporting director Richard Hughes is well aware that the player will soon be eligible to sign a pre-contract with the Premier League champions.
