Champions League 2025-26: Madrid & Barca fancied for top eight finish
Madrid have given themselves a solid foundation to work from in the Champions League and look a good bet to progress automatically to the knockout stage.
They face Liverpool (A) and Manchester City (H) in their remaining six league phase fixtures, but the rest of their schedule looks relatively favourable.
Sixteen points was enough to secure a top eight finish last season and Madrid are already well on their way to achieving that tally.
Barcelona should also secure a place in the last-16, despite slipping to a 2-1 home defeat against reigning champion Paris Saint-Germain in their most recent outing.
A trip to Club World Cup winners Chelsea on Matchday 5 is as tough as it gets for Barcelona in their remaining fixtures and they are strongly fancied to finish in the top eight.
Atletico Madrid could also secure automatic progression to the last 16 if they can avoid defeat at Arsenal in their next fixture.
The composition of Atletico’s remaining matches gives them every chance of finishing in the top eight for the second successive season.
Villarreal face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stage after collecting just one point form their fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus.
Matches against Manchester City (H), Borussia Dortmund (A) and Bayer Leverkusen (A) will test their mettle and they could miss out on finishing inside the top 24.
Athletic are also on the back foot after suffering defeats against Arsenal and Dortmund in their first two league phase outings.
They are the bookmakers’ favourites to defeat Qarabag in their next outing, despite their opponents boasting a perfect record after two games.
Each of their other five fixtures are potential banana skins and Athletic look destined to make an early exit from the competition.
