Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali open to Serie A return: “I’m not closing the door”

Ahead of Italy’s crucial match against Estonia on Matchday five of World Cup Qualifying, Sandro Tonali caught up with Vivo Azzurro.

The former AC Milan player spoke about current Italian affairs, but also discussed a possible return to Serie A: “You can never know what will happen, I tell everyone it’s possible. I’m not closing the door on Italy; it’s my country.

He also stated belief that Serie A’s level is rising and is higher than it was earlier.

He said, via Di Marzio: “Maybe not now because I’ve found my balance at Newcastle, but the league is getting better and better, the level of the teams is rising.”

This came after Tonali was spotted in Milan with his agent Beppe Riso. This was seen as a meeting to discuss the midfielder’s future at Newcastle United.

Reports also spoke of Juventus’ interest in Tonali, stating that while they tried to sign the player in the summer, a future attempt cannot be ruled out.

The Italian clearly is keen on a future return to Serie A and doesn’t hide his admiration for Calcio.

Ahead of his country’s clash with Estonia, the Brescia native also addressed Gennaro Gattuso’s patriotic approach to the national team.

“He instils a lot of attachment to the shirt in us. The intensity of training is high, the desire to train is immense. In the past, we’d get lost in a glass of water; if we conceded the first goal, we’d cause problems for ourselves. Now we’ve rediscovered our courage.”

Regarding praise from Paul Scholes, who called Tonali the best midfielder in the Premier League, the former Rossoneri man said:

“Every time you get compliments from strong former players, it’s nice and you’re surprised, it’s always a nice feeling.”
