Chelsea unlikely to launch winter move for Kobbie Mainoo

Chelsea will not launch a bid to sign 20-year-old English international Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Kobbie Mainoo is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder next year. So, the 20-year-old Manchester United whizkid has emerged as a target for the West London club.

However, the 2024/25 FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League winners have no interest in launching a winter bid to sign the Englishman in the winter transfer window. Meanwhile, Mainoo is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur, with the North London club closely monitoring his situation at Manchester United.

Kobbie Mainoo and his frustrations

Kobbie Mainoo has seen his stock drop since Ruben Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag as the Manchester United manager last year. The 20-year-old struggled with fitness issues in the 2024/25 season, and he has been behind Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte in the pecking order this season.

The English international has managed only 203 minutes of game time in six outings thus far in the 2025/26 season, and Amorim has yet to hand him a start in the Premier League. However, Mainoo’s stock in the market is high, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Kobbie Mainoo has been on Chelsea’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is surprising yet understandable, even though Enzo Maresca has a stacked midfield unit. While Andrey Santos has added to Chelsea’s options this season, Enzo Fernandez’s long-term future is uncertain, as he has piqued the attention of Real Madrid. So, Mainoo is a viable target for the West London club.

As for Tottenham Hotspur, the North London club may part ways with Yves Bissouma, even though recent reports have claimed that Thomas Frank may hand the Malian midfielder a lifeline. So, Mainoo is an option worth considering, with Tottenham closely monitoring the Englishman’s situation at Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will wait until the summer transfer window to launch a bid to sign the 20-year-old English international. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Mainoo amid his struggles for regular game time at Manchester United.
