Alan Pardew reacts to Marc Guehi Liverpool transfer collapse

Crystal Palace legend Alan Pardew opens up on Marc Guehi’s failed Liverpool move during the summer transfer window.

Marc Guehi’s future was one of the biggest talking points throughout the summer. The English international did seem to be on his way out, and Liverpool emerged as favourites for his signature. When everything was in place for the transfer to go through, Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal in the eleventh hour of the window.

The 25-year-old wasn’t really pleased with the Eagles’ decision to stand in his way. However, he hasn’t caused any issues in the dressing room and continues to be a key figure in the team under Oliver Glasner.

Alan Pardew on Guehi’s failed Liverpool move

Speaking about his failed move to the Merseyside club on The Transfer Show, former Palace manager Alan Pardew stated that it was a blessing in disguise that Guehi’s proposed switch to Liverpool didn’t go through.

He said via Sky Sports: “The bottom line is what we have here is an outstanding individual as a footballer and as a personality, and every club will want him.

“Marc has ended up, in my view, in a better position, than if he’d have moved to Liverpool. He’s now perhaps even still got Liverpool. So who knows? He’s in a great position.

“I know he’s a real family person and I know his father is very influential and I think between them the decision will be made.”

Guehi entered the final year of his contract at the start of the summer. With less than a year left on his deal and a renewal nowhere in sight, a departure seemed almost certain. However, Palace were not willing to accept a lowball offer.

Liverpool were keen on signing him. The Reds had him as a priority target, but the negotiations kept dragging on as Arne Slot’s team was not willing to meet Palace’s demands. Neither club were ready to compromise. However, they did reach an agreement prior to the transfer deadline.

The move was expected to go through on deadline day. Guehi was all set to be a new Liverpool player, but the move collapsed as Oliver Glasner asked Steve Parish to pull the plug after they failed to find a replacement.

Guehi to choose his next club

The 25-year-old ended up staying at Selhurst Park for another season. A move to Anfield would have been a great step for Guehi’s career. But former Palace boss Pardew believes his move to Liverpool not going through actually works in his favour.

With his contract running out at the end of the season, Guehi will be in a much stronger position to choose his next club in the summer. While Liverpool remain an option for the England international, he could opt to join another top side, as there is no shortage of interest in him.

The Chelsea graduate is known to be a family-oriented individual, and his father has played a major role in shaping his career over the years. As a result, the two are expected to sit down soon to decide his future.
