UEFA Greenlights History-Making Milan-Como in Australia
UEFA has approved the Milan-Como match to take place in Perth, Australia, in early February. While the Supercoppa has been played abroad several times, it’ll be the first Serie A game to do so. The governing body also okayed Villarreal-Barcelona in Miami on December 20th. FIFA needs to rubber-stamp the decision, but it’s not expected to be an issue, La Repubblica informs.
The game needed an alternative location because San Siro will be unavailable, as it will host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Rather than searching for a fallback option nearby, the Italian officials opted to try to move the match to a different country as a promotional tool. Australia quickly emerged as a willing partner.
UEFA opposed the proposition at first, but, in the end, it didn’t have any legal instruments to block it. In a statement, it specified that Milan-Como and Villarreal-Barcelona were exceptions and invited FIFA to legislate on the matter.
Serie A president Ezio Simonelli rejoiced.
“A contingency turned into an opportunity.
Perth will reportedly pay €12M to host Milan-Como. The Rossoneri, which are losing the game-day profits, will pocket the largest slice of the pie. Part of the sum will cover the travel costs, but some money will trickle down to the other Italian clubs, too.
The tilt will take place either on February 7th or 8th. The teams will leave early in the week to get acclimated to the different time zone. They’ll find significantly different weather and temperatures.
Milan will refund their season-ticket holders with a voucher to attend other fixtures. There’ll be some initiatives to help the fans who want to make the trip to Australia. The Rossoneri have played two friendlies in Perth since May 2024.
