Aston Villa ready to sell Emiliano Buendia, reason revealed

Aston Villa could be forced to sell Emiliano Buendia ahead of the January window owing to his contract situation and PSR regulations.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa might contemplate selling Emiliano Buendia ahead of the January window. The club could weigh up a sale of the Argentine playmaker to further ease their PSR issues, as well as improve their financial standing, with 18 months left on his deal.

A lot was happening in the background at Aston Villa during the summer, as the club were forced to sit back for large periods without much activity. With a club of this stature carrying big ambitions to fight for a Champions League place, Villa did have an underwhelming period in the transfer market.

While they managed to keep hold of star names like Emi Martinez and Morgan Rogers, there were those they failed to sell. Emiliano Buendia is the name that springs to mind, as the club blocked a late move to Leeds United.

Aston Villa might have been open to selling the player late in the window, as they chased Lucas Paqueta from West Ham United. However, with a late deal for the Brazilian playmaker not materialising, the prospect of selling Buendia at the moment looked like a risky proposition for Villa.

Hence, they decided to block a late move to Leeds United and keep hold of the Argentine, as offloading him without a replacement would have weakened the squad. The resurgent playmaker has been in decent form this season for Unai Emery’s side, after scoring twice and assisting once in nine games across all competitions. This could be the final stretch at the club for the former Norwich City star.

Aston Villa ready to sell Emiliano Buendia

Aston Villa still have a lot of PSR constraints, and they would like to actively find solutions ahead of the January window. The club are likely to stay active in the winter window to find fresh solutions to strengthen their squad, and they might need to sell a player or two, with Buendia one of those likely to depart.

There are concerns with Martinez and Rogers ahead of the winter market, but with Buendia’s contract expiring in 2027, he could be in the right place to get a decent value from suitors. Hence, the Argentine could be the one leaving Villa, in what has been an underwhelming return to the club’s big investment in the former Norwich star.
