Liverpool unwilling to sell Joe Gomez in January amid AC Milan links
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been linked with a move away from the Merseyside club in recent months, with AC Milan interested in him.
Joe Gomez was expected to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window, but a move did not materialise. AC Milan were interested in securing his signature, and a winter move may have been possible as well.
According to a report by Football Insider, the Serie A outfit are keeping tabs on him ahead of the winter transfer window as well. However, Liverpool have no intention of letting him move on. They want to keep the 28-year-old at the club.
Liverpool failed to sign Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window. The English international completed his medical with Liverpool ahead of a potential move, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal.
Liverpool are lacking defensive depth, and they need to keep Gomez at the club. Ibrahima Konate will be a free agent in the summer, and Liverpool have not been able to agree on a new deal with him. It would be ideal for Liverpool to keep Gomez at the club and add more quality to the defensive unit.
Gomez is a useful player for the club
The 28-year-old is a very useful utility man for them, as he can operate as a central defender, a full-back as well as a defensive midfielder. Joe Gomez is excellent with the ball at his feet, and he is an exceptional defender when he is fit.
Although the Englishman’s availability remains a major concern, he has had persistent injury problems during his time at the club. However, he still remains an asset for Liverpool, and they simply cannot afford to lose him. They will need quality squad players like Gomez if they want to build a team capable of doing well across multiple competitions.
The 28-year-old will be disappointed with his situation at the Merseyside club, and he will hope to play regularly. He is at the peak of his career, and sitting on the bench at Liverpool will not be his preferred choice.
However, the English international has been at the club since he was a teenager, and he is unlikely to force an exit any time soon. It remains to be seen how the situation develops. Moving to AC Milan would have been exciting for him. The Rossoneri are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they could have offered him regular game time.
