Dennis Cirkin may stall contract talks with Sunderland amid Tottenham links
Dennis Cirkin may apply the brakes on any potential contract talks with Sunderland, as he may have a chance to rejoin Tottenham in January.
According to TBR, Dennis Cirkin is likely to leave Sunderland as the left-back may put the brakes on any potential contract talks in the near future. The defender is in the final year of his deal, and Tottenham are interested in re-signing him, which may see Sunderland consider offers in the winter window.
Dennis Cirkin played an instrumental role in Sunderland’s push towards the Premier League last season. He featured 36 times in the Championship last season, as well as the three playoff games to gain promotion to the top flight.
Sunderland had a strong window, where they spent heavily but wisely to strengthen their squad in line with Premier League standards. The club prioritised staying in the top flight through their business in the window, which included some notable names, including left-back pair Arthur Masuaku and Reinildo Mandava.
Their arrival leaves no room for Cirkin, and the defender has not yet played a game for the club this season. Part of the reason for his absence from the matchday squad has the contractual situation written all over it, with the 23-year-old former Tottenham whizkid already into the final year of his deal at the Stadium of Light.
While the report states Cirkin could stall any potential contract talks in the near future, it appears Sunderland are not eager to offer fresh terms either. Hence, the club are looking to sell their fringe stars, including Cirkin, in the January window to potentially make space in the squad for further recruits.
Tottenham’s interest is key in Dennis Cerkin’s decision
Tottenham had been looking at Cerkin during the summer to add to their squad depth, with the left-back position being one they are somewhat short at. Thomas Frank wanted a regular option in that role to deputise for Destiny Udogie, as they have consistently used Djed Spence there more often than not, who happens to be a right back by trade.
Tottenham are still interested in Cirkin ahead of January, and their presence in the chase makes Sunderland all the more confident about selling the defender in the winter window. It remains to be seen how much the newly promoted side would want for the 23-year-old, who will potentially be a cheaper option for Spurs if they were to seriously attempt to sign him.
