Hansi Flick receives Barcelona backing over Lamine Yamal case – “He is absolutely right”

Over the last seven days, there has been a lot of focus on Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal, who is currently injured. A pelvic issue was said to have been identified during the international duty, but despite this, he still started – and played significant minutes – in Spain’s 2026 World Cup qualifying victories over Bulgaria and Türkiye.

Hansi Flick confirmed the news that Lamine Yamal was struggling with the injury, which has so far caused him to miss matches against Valencia and Newcastle United – and there could be out for longer, depending on his evolution in the next 48 hours. The Barcelona head coach took aim at Spanish Football Federation officials over their handling of his star player, which has led to some controversy.

Joan Laporta backs Hansi Flick stance on Lamine Yamal case

And now Flick has been backed up on the matter by Barcelona president Joan Laporta. Speaking to the media in Newcastle ahead of the Champions League showdown at St James’  Park, he spoke on the matter (via Sport).

“Our coach has already said everything he had to say and he is absolutely right.”

Laporta’s number two Rafa Yuste was also asked to give his thoughts on the situation, although he refused to be as upfront (also via Sport).

“It is an issue that Deco handles directly and that, therefore, I have nothing more to say. I wish Lamine a speedy recovery.”

Barcelona may not have missed Lamine Yamal during the thumping win over Valencia last weekend, but that is not certain to be the case against Newcastle. Flick has quality reinforcements at his disposal, but replacing one of the best players in the world will not be easy to achieve, and he will hope that the 18-year-old is able to make a return to action sooner rather than later.
