Atletico Madrid interested in signing Andrew Robertson
Atletico Madrid retain an interest in Andrew Robertson, with the Spanish giants already planning on a 2026 approach either in January or the summer.
According to Fichajes, Andrew Robertson remains a prominent name on Atletico Madrid’s shortlist of defensive targets. The left-back’s deal at Liverpool expires next summer, which opens a small window of opportunity for a January approach, although the Spanish giants will also be there when the summer window opens.
Liverpool made some big changes to their squad, which required the club to spend heavily on recruits. While the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz grabbed the headlines about their summer business, the club also made essential signings in the full-back areas with the arrivals of Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
The latter’s arrival opened speculation about the immediate future of Andrew Robertson, with Atletico Madrid showing an interest in signing him. Diego Simeone has been open to signing experienced players in his defensive setup during his spell that has spanned over a decade, with the Liverpool veteran seen as a key signing.
Liverpool were reportedly open to cashing in, although they might have only wanted one of Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas to leave. The latter did leave before the deadline with a loan move to AS Roma, which has left Robertson as Arne Slot’s second choice left back behind Kerkez.
However, Robertson has shown signs of usurping his place from Kerkez in recent games, although he has a contract that expires in 2026. He was expected to hold showdown talks with Liverpool during the summer amid Atletico Madrid’s interest, and it appears those discussions led to the Liverpool veteran staying at the club for the time being.
Atletico Madrid high on Andrew Robertson case
Robertson was reportedly open to joining Atletico Madrid when the interest first emerged, and that could encourage the Spanish giants to keep him on their shortlist. With the January window fast approaching and the Liverpool veteran out of contract next year, there’s a big possibility of an approach then.
However, Liverpool may not want to lose Robertson midway through the season with the expectation pointing at Slot’s men challenging for all honours possible. Hence, the chances of a January departure are remote, although Atletico Madrid could get their man next summer on a Bosman deal.
