Barcelona manager Hansi Flick all-but confirms Lamine Yamal replacement for Newcastle clash – “I hope he can”

Barcelona are in the final stages of preparing for their first Champions League match of the season, which is against Newcastle United on Thursday. The Catalans will be eyeing three points to start their league phase campaign, albeit it will be a tough test at a raucous St James’ Park.

Ahead of the match, Hansi Flick has spoken to the media in Newcastle. As per Diario AS, he gave his thoughts on the showdown clash against the Premier League side.

“I’ve never been here, but my players tell me this stadium is one of the best atmospheres. I expect a great team, with intensity and attentive to the second plays. Eddie Howe is a great coach and they have done a great job.

“What we saw against Valencia was very positive. We are playing well in all facets. With this confidence it is important to play tomorrow. You have to have the ball and take advantage of the spaces. It will not be an easy match. They are very strong and there are very strong teams in this Champions League, but we are confident.”

Newcastle’s supporters are expected to make it a very intimidating atmosphere on Thursday, but despite having a young squad, Flick is not worried.

“There are many young people, but also veterans, especially the Spaniards. They know how to handle pressure. It is our strength. We have confidence with the ball and we have to come out focused from the beginning. Last season we were many points behind and we turned around. We were confident, but it’s important to start well from the beginning.”

Flick hints at Marcus Rashford starting against Newcastle

Flick was asked about Lamine Yamal’s absence for the match, and his response indicated that he will opt for Marcus Rashford, who will return to England for the first time since his summer move from Manchester United, as his replacement in the starting line-up.

“I want to talk about the players who can play. Tomorrow he can’t play and we’ll see on Sunday. We have a good squad and there are people for the position. Rashford is in the team. If someone can’t play, he can come in. I hope he can show in England what he did on Sunday.”
