Morgan Rogers could be tempted to join Champions League club
Morgan Rogers could be tempted to join one of the UEFA Champions League sides, which would hand a significant boost to Chelsea and Tottenham in their pursuits.
According to Football Insider, Chelsea and Tottenham could receive a significant boost in their pursuit of Morgan Rogers, who might be open to joining a team in the Champions League. Speculation could point towards a January switch, although Aston Villa are unlikely to take such risks, as a summer move might be the more likely outcome.
Morgan Rogers was a name that lingered around on the shortlists of some of the big clubs in the Premier League, as Aston Villa held on to the 23-year-old playmaker. The Englishman has a long-term contract at Villa Park, which does give Unai Emery’s side significant leeway in negotiations, as they had no plans to sell him during the window.
Should Aston Villa fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League, there is a big chance they could sell Rogers. As the report states, the 23-year-old Aston Villa playmaker could depart for a team in the premier continental competition if an opportunity arises in future windows, which would boost the chances of Chelsea and Tottenham.
Starting with Tottenham, they held preliminary talks around the latter stages of the window to explore a late move for the 23-year-old Aston Villa playmaker. They were dealt significant blows in pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White, Eberechi Eze, and Nico Paz at that stage, as they might have been open to paying significantly for Morgan Rogers.
However, Aston Villa held strong with their stance of keeping hold of Rogers, with the 23-year-old likely to play a key role should the club challenge for a top-four place. Hence, while Rogers might be tempted to join a team in the Champions League, Aston Villa are unlikely to risk their chances of qualifying for the competition with a sale in the winter transfer window, although a summer move might seem the more likely outcome.
Chelsea are active in Morgan Rogers race
Chelsea were also interested in Rogers, and were reportedly prepared to pay big to acquire the 23-year-old Aston Villa playmaker. The Blues scrambled late on to sign an attacking midfielder despite the arrival of Alejandro Garnacho. They missed out on the likes of Xavi Simons and Fermin Lopez, as they ended up bringing Facundo Buonanotte on a loan deal from Brighton.
Morgan Rogers is someone high on Chelsea’s shortlist of long-term targets, as they could be a strong contender if Aston Villa opens the doors. With the English international likely to depart without Champions League football next summer, Chelsea have a big chance to land him next summer, even though they might have to pay significantly for the young playmaker.
