Isaac Schmidt eyeing long-term stay at Werder Bremen
Isaac Schmidt is already eyeing a permanent move to Werder Bremen following a bright start to life in Germany, as he may not want to play for Leeds United again.
Issac Schmidt was considered a promising talent who could fit into the mould of English football. Leeds United spent around £2.5 million to sign the right-back from Swiss side FC St. Gallen, but he was barely used by Daniel Farke last season in the EFL Championship.
The presence of Junior Firpo and Adam Bogle in the full-back spots ensured that Schmidt only featured 12 times, which amounted to only 71 minutes of action in the Championship. The player was destined for an exit as he wanted regular game time somewhere, and that may not have been possible at Leeds United after their promotion to the Premier League.
Schmidt has since joined Werder Bremen on loan for the whole season, and despite the German side showing hesitation in sealing the deal earlier, he got it over the line. There are expectations from the Bundesliga side for Schmidt to perform at his best, and so far, he has done so, albeit having played only once.
Isaac Schmidt does not see a long-term future at Leeds, as his comments on Bild via Caught Offside suggest he would like to stay at Werder Bremen permanently. He said, “I’m currently looking for an apartment so I can really settle in Bremen. I’d like to play for Werder for a longer period. That’s my big goal. Of course, I know that a lot will depend on my performance here.”
Werder Bremen only signed him on loan for the remainder of the season, but that deal has a buy option inserted. Hence, for the Leeds United misfit to get a permanent move with the Bundesliga giants, he may need top-notch performances and consistency throughout the campaign.
So far, Isaac Schmidt has started brightly following his 19-minute cameo. At the time he came on the pitch, Werder Bremen were trailing Bayer Leverkusen 3-1, and within five minutes of his arrival, the Leeds United misfit scored and set the game up nicely. In the end, Werder Bremen earned a draw, and Schmidt had a big role to play.
With the defender already thinking about settling down at Werder Bremen, he was also called up by the Swiss national team for the recent international break. Hence, it’s clear that Schmidt needs to play regularly, to maintain his presence in the national side as well as the chance to feature in next year’s World Cup.
