Predicted Liverpool lineup against Burnley: Isak likely off the bench; Szoboszlai at right-back again
Alexander Isak will start his first match since joining Liverpool on the bench when they take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.
Liverpool will aim to continue a flawless start to the 2025/26 Premier League season when they lock horns with Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon. Arne Slot has received positive updates on the team news front ahead of his side’s latest fixture.
Jeremie Frimpong has resumed training after recovering from a hamstring injury. The Dutch full-back will face a late fitness test to determine his availability. So, Curtis Jones is the only player on the sidelines, with the English midfielder recovering from a knock.
However, the most notable talking point ahead of the game has been Alexander Isak’s fitness, with the Swedish international in line for his debut. During his pre-match press conference, Slot discussed Isak’s progress and spoke about other players dealing with injury concerns.
“He missed a proper pre-season, I think he missed three or four months of team sessions, so now we have to build him up gradually with us playing so many games and [having] very little training time.”
“So, that’s going to be a challenge but we’ve signed him not only for the upcoming two weeks, we’ve signed him, I think, for six years so this is what we have to keep in mind and what the fans have to keep in mind if they see that I take him off at a certain moment or I only bring him in for a small amount of minutes. That’s all for the long-term fitness of the player.”
Speaking about Jones and Frimpong, the Liverpool boss said, “Curtis Jones, of course, I don’t know if you knew, but he got injured in the last game, so he will not be available for the game against Burnley. The rest of them I think all came back without a problem.”
Isak will start on the bench, with Hugo Ektike leading the line for the away side against Burnley. Florian Wirtz will reprise the no. 10 role, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo being the two wide attackers. As for the midfield unit, there is no looking past Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in the double pivot.
Dominik Szoboszlai will continue as the right-back, joining Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Milos Kerkez on the sidelines. Finally, there is no looking past Alisson Becker between the sticks, with Giorgi Mamardashvili still waiting for his debut.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Szoboszlai, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike
