Manchester United prioritising holding midfielder signing in January

Manchester United are prioritising a move for a holding midfielder in the winter transfer window, with several options likely to be explored.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United will prioritise signing a new holding midfielder when the January transfer window opens. The Red Devils will explore several names in the winter months to strengthen a key area of their squad that they tried during the summer.

Manchester United ended the summer transfer window with by signing Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, while also shipping out Andre Onana on loan to Trabzonspor. Their fans did love the idea of a new goalkeeper in their ranks, but they also wanted the club to bring in a holding midfielder as a priority.

There were big links to Carlos Baleba for a concerted period, but they decided against pursuing a move for the midfielder. Manchester United are unlikely to chase the Brighton & Hove Albion star in January, although next summer, they might contemplate trying again for the rising star.

Conor Gallagher was mentioned late in the window, but the Atletico Madrid star is not seen as an out-and-out holding midfielder; however, they probably looked at him as an option to replace Kobbie Mainoo. Then there was Angelo Stiller, with the VfB Stuttgart man reportedly rejecting an approach from Manchester United.

Manchester United are now linked with Ruben Neves ahead of the winter transfer window, which indicates they have not moved away from recruiting a new holding midfielder. There are quite a lot of names being linked with the Red Devils, as it remains to be seen whether they make a move in January.

Manchester United prioritising a holding midfielder

Manchester United are prioritising a move for a holding midfielder for when the winter transfer window opens, as that is an area Ruben Amorim feels short in. Without signing a new face before the deadline in the role, the manager is expected to use Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in a double pivot, but that may not be enough to sustain the season.

Hence, a new holding midfielder is of the utmost priority for Manchester United in January, which could see the club explore several names. Who among those are their top priority remains the question, but there is an expectation for a new face to arrive.
