Liverpool ready to wait until next summer for Marc Guehi

Liverpool could opt to wait until next summer to sign Marc Guehi on a free transfer, as a January approach might be dependent on their progress.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool might opt to wait out until Marc Guehi finishes his Crystal Palace contract rather than swooping in during the January window. There might still be an approach in the winter window depending on how Arne Slot’s current defensive setup progresses, although next summer could also prove a bit risky.

Liverpool fans are still angry at Crystal Palace for the failed move of Marc Guehi. The English defender was all set to join the Merseyside outfit on deadline day, with the club eager to cap off a stellar transfer window with late arrivals of Alexander Isak and the England international, having signed the former earlier on the day.

However, Crystal Palace’s inability to find a suitable replacement on deadline day saw the move for Guehi collapse in the eleventh hour. Liverpool are widely expected to return in January for the centre-back, as they still view him as a priority signing.

The same outlet had earlier reported that Marc Guehi might cost around £25 million in January, which would be at a significant discount compared to the price Liverpool agreed on deadline day. However, the Merseysiders are now ready to bide their time with the move for the defender, and may even wait it out until the summer to sign him on a free transfer then.

There’s widespread competition expected from overseas clubs for Guehi right from when the January window opens. However, Liverpool might feel confident that the £25 million-rated summer target will choose them over others, as they might run a big risk should they push the move until the summer.

Liverpool to take January call on Marc Guehi

As it would be a big preference for Liverpool to pursue Guehi next summer, they might also consider a January approach depending on how Arne Slot’s defence has progressed until then. However, the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race for the defender, which could spell trouble for Liverpool.

As it is with overseas clubs, they could potentially wrap up a pre-contract agreement with Marc Guehi right from January, whereas Liverpool will still need to agree a fee with Palace then. Hence, should they wait it out until the summer, there are no guarantees that the £25 million-rated summer target will choose them over other illustrious sides like Real Madrid.
