Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool in January, Crystal Palace attempted late summer move
Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez could be set for a January exit after Crystal Palace’s failed summer approach.
According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Joe Gomez could end up parting ways with Liverpool when the transfer window reopens in January. Crystal Palace were one of the clubs that enquired about him late on in the summer, and they could return for him at the turn of the calendar.
Gomez has been a part of the Liverpool setup since 2015. He has only gone from strength to strength since and has been an integral part of their plans in recent seasons. The 28-year-old might not be a regular starter, but he does have an important role thanks to his ability to feature anywhere across the backline.
The English international is quite happy at Anfield, and he still has two years left on his deal, but his future has become an interesting talking point. Multiple clubs explored a last-ditch deal for Gomez this summer. However, the Reds were not open to his departure as they couldn’t secure the services of Marc Guehi.
Clubs could return for Gomez’s signature in the winter, and the Reds could sanction his departure if they manage to sign the Crystal Palace mainstays. While the 28-year-old is in no rush to leave, his future may be dependent on Guehi.
O’Rourke’s take on Gomez’s future
While speaking about Gomez’s future on Football Insider, O’Rourke said: “There’ll be a lot of dominoes to fall potentially, for Joe Gomez to leave Anfield”,
“The thing is with Joe Gomez is that he’s happy at Liverpool, he’s in no rush to leave.
“It’s no surprise that clubs like AC Milan were looking at Gomez – they were looking to bring in a new centre-back.
“There was even interest from Brighton late on in the window and [Crystal] Palace had him on their list as well if they did lose [Marc] Guehi.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s interest in Joe Gomez in January, but a lot will depend on how things are going at Liverpool.”
Guehi’s arrival could pave way for Gomez’s exit
The Reds were on the verge of signing Guehi on deadline day. But Oliver Glasner intervened and stopped the transfer from going through. His move to Anfield collapsing might be one of the reasons why Liverpool were not willing to sell Gomez despite interest from multiple top clubs.
With Guehi’s future uncertain, the Eagles were one of the clubs to enquire about the 28-year-old. They consider the Liverpool star to be a ready-made replacement for their defensive mainstay.
Liverpool will return for the signature of the 25-year-old in January, and if they manage to strike a deal for him, Palace could then try again for Gomez.
Following the arrival of Guehi, the 28-year-old might go down the pecking order, and with just 18 months left on his deal, the Reds could seriously consider cashing in on him.
