“Now everyone recognises me” – Dean Huijsen reacts to first months at Real Madrid

Dean Huijsen has made a very promising start to life as a Real Madrid player, following his summer move from AFC Bournemouth. The 20-year-old has already established himself as a regular starter, and this is also the case with the Spanish national team – whom he will be playing with over the next few days.

Huijsen, who has been nominated for the Kopa Trophy, is expected to start for La Roja in Thursday’s opening 2026 World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria, and ahead of that match, he spoke to Marca. He addressed his start to life as a Real Madrid, which he has been very pleased by.

“It seems that everything happens very quickly, but each player takes steps little by little. This has been a big step, without a doubt. For any footballer, this is the case when they join Real Madrid. But I feel fine. I like kits, the people… Everyone has welcomed me very well. In addition, the facilities, the trips… everything is spectacular. I am very happy.”

Huijsen also discussed how his life has changed since becoming a Real Madrid player.

“One imagines it, but living it is different. You really realise what this club means at any time. I am very grateful to the fans. And now everyone recognises me. Sometimes I try to go unnoticed with a cap or glasses, but it doesn’t always work.”

He was also asked about Lamine Yamal, whom he plays with on an international basis, but is a direct rival at club level.

“Lamine is a great player. I hope he does very well here and that when we face each other in La Liga, he doesn’t do much.”

At 20, Huijsen has many years ahead of him at the heart of the defences of Real Madrid and Spain, which is sure to be a very exciting prospect of fans of both sides, given how well he has come on over the last 12 months.
