Antony reveals he turned down Bayern Munich move
Real Betis summer signing Antony has revealed that he turned down a move to Bayern Munich in order to join them.
Antony’s future was one of the biggest talking points throughout the summer. While he was back at Old Trafford following an impressive loan spell at Real Betis, the Brazilian international wasn’t a part of Ruben Amorim’s plans.
His departure was certain, but Betis were struggling to secure his services on a permanent basis. Manchester United’s demands were a massive hurdle for them. It gave Bayern Munich an opportunity to try and sign the 25-year-old.
Antony rejected Bayern Munich
Although Bayern did come calling, he turned down the chance to join the German giants as his heart was set on a move to Betis. In an interview with Juanma Castano for COPE’s El Partidazo, he revealed that he held talks with Bayern but rejected them after giving his word to Betis.
Antony said: “I spoke with Bayern, I don’t know if it was 7 million, but I said I had Betis’s word and that it was 95% closed and that I would respect my word. I feel calm about making this decision because I am very happy here. More than five teams called me .”
Antony joined United in the summer of 2022 from Ajax in a big-money move. While the Manchester-based giants had massive expectations from him, he failed to deliver. The 25-year-old eventually lost his place in the team and was sent on loan to Betis for the second half of last season.
Antony stayed true to Betis
He had a massive impact at the Spanish club and finished with 14 goal contributions in his 26 outings. Following his impressive loan spell, Betis were keen on signing him permanently, but they were struggling to meet United’s demands.
At one point, a move to Betis seemed unlikely, but Antony had spoken to people at the club who assured him the deal was close. As a result, despite receiving offers from five different clubs, including Bayern Munich, he chose to wait for the Spanish side.
The German giants were reportedly prepared to offer him double the wages Betis had put on the table. Even so, he turned them down, having already given his word to the La Liga club. After the way Betis embraced him during his loan spell, Antony was determined to make the move permanent.
