Official: Ederson Moraes joins Fenerbahce

Ederson Moraes has officially joined Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahce from Manchester City in a deal worth £12 million.

In an official statement on Manchester City’s official website, the Citizens have confirmed that Ederson Moraes has joined Fenerbahce. The Brazilian international spent eight years with the Premier League club, winning 18 trophies. The veteran goalkeeper expressed his gratitude to Manchester City as he embarked on his new adventure in Turkiye.

He said, “I leave Manchester City incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, and I am honoured to have worn the shirt so many times. Under Pep, we have won dominated the Premier League and conquered Europe. It has been amazing. I would first of all like to thank him and Head of Goalkeeping Xabier Mancisidor for making me the best goalkeeper I could be and teaching so much about the game.”

“I must also thank my team-mates. Our desire to win every game we play has been a joy to be a part of and that has made me relish every day on the training field or in the dressing room with every one of you. Finally, the fans. Thank you for making me feel at home in a city so far away from where I am from and for supporting me throughout what has been an amazing period for me and my family.”

Ederson Moraes enjoyed a trophy-laden stint after joining Manchester City from SL Benfica in July 2017. While the 32-year-old gradually became error-prone, his ball-playing ability was second to none. However, the experienced goalkeeper lost his spot as the first-choice goalkeeper after Manchester City re-signed James Trafford from Burnley.

The Brazilian international made over 350 appearances for Manchester City while keeping 168 clean sheets and conceding 311 goals. However, the veteran goalkeeper had no future at Manchester City after Trafford returned and Gianluigi Donnarumma emerged as a target. The player’s next destination is Turkiye, with Fenerbahce securing the agreement to land him.

Fenerbahce joined the race to sign Ederson Moraes from Manchester City a few days ago and did not waste any time in wrapping up the deal. The Turkish club’s interest in the player made sense, as Dominik Livakovic faced an uncertain future at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

While Galatasaray also attempted to sign the South American goalkeeper and advanced talks with Manchester City, they could not wrap up the deal before Fenerbahce emerged on the scene. That has evidently allowed Galatasaray’s bitter rivals to swoop in, and the Yellow Canaries have stolen a march on the Turkish Super Lig champions.

Meanwhile, an announcement by Fenerbahce has revealed that the 32-year-old has travelled to Istanbul for his medical checks. The Brazilian international should officially become a Fenerbahce player once he completes those tests in a deal worth a reported £12 million.
