Marc Guehi stance revealed after Liverpool deadline-day transfer collapse

Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi has been left angry and disappointed after his deadline-day move to Liverpool collapsed.

According to Mick Brown via Football Insider, Marc Guehi isn’t pleased that Crystal Palace pulled the plug on his deadline-day move to Liverpool. The defender had his heart set on the switch to Anfield, but the Eagles blocked the transfer.

Guehi joined Palace back in 2021. While things didn’t go according to plan for him at Chelsea, he managed to establish himself as a key figure at Selhurst Park in no time. He has only gone from strength to strength over the years and is an integral part of Oliver Glasner’s squad.

The 25-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and he is a constant feature in the English national team. Following his impressive rise, multiple top clubs have been interested in his services.

While the Eagles have managed to hold onto him so far, he was expected to be on the move this summer, having entered the final year of his deal. Liverpool emerged as a potential destination. The Reds have identified him as an ideal successor to Virgil van Dijk and had everything in place to sign him on deadline day.

Palace were playing hardball. They were initially reluctant to sell but eventually opened negotiations, as they didn’t want to risk losing him for free next summer. While Liverpool pushed for the move and the player had his heart set on joining them, Guehi remained respectful.

He didn’t try to force his way out and stayed committed to the Eagles. Given how things had developed, he was hopeful of securing his dream move to Anfield this summer. However, things didn’t go according to plan for him.

Brown on Palace blocking Guehi’s departure

While speaking about Guehi’s failed move to Liverpool, Brown said: “It looked like an absolute done deal for Guehi to join Liverpool,

“It was a bit of an impossible situation for Palace given how late it was in the window, but ultimately it looked like they’d accepted an offer.

“He isn’t happy with the situation, he’s disappointed and angry that he didn’t get the move he’s been after, particularly with the decision made so late in the day.

“He’s done everything right, kept his mouth shut and got on with it, but ultimately he’s been stitched up.

“So he has every right to be unhappy with the way things have played out.

“From everything I’m told about him, he’s a smashing lad and an outstanding professional.

“I don’t think he’s the type to kick up a major fuss and start causing issues for everybody.

“He’ll get on with it, continue playing for Crystal Palace as he has throughout this saga, and he will eventually get his move away because of his contract.”

Guehi frustrated after Liverpool move collapses

While a deadline day move certainly looked difficult, the Reds were optimistic about it going through, and so was the player. However, Palace pulled the plug late on after Oliver Glasner made it clear to Steve Parish what the consequences of losing their mainstay would be.

Liverpool waited until 48 hours before the transfer deadline to make a formal offer, but Palace failed to find a replacement, making the move impossible. Eventually, the Eagles decided against sanctioning his departure, leaving the player angry and disappointed with their last-minute decision to block his switch.

While Guehi is unhappy with how things have unfolded, he is unlikely to cause any issues behind the scenes. Liverpool are expected to return for him in January, and given his contract situation, a move seems inevitable sooner or later.
