Chelsea contemplate late hijack of Liverpool move for Marc Guehi
Chelsea may look to steal a march on Liverpool in the race to sign 25-year-old English international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace before the summer transfer window closes.
According to a report by Caught Offside, Marc Guehi is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are mulling over bolstering their defensive unit by signing another centre-back in the final hours of the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old Crystal Palace defender has been a target for the West London outfit.
The 2024/25 UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup winners are mulling over hijacking Liverpool’s move for the Englishman. The Reds have submitted a bid worth £35 million to sign the Crystal Palace skipper. Meanwhile, Guehi is reportedly keen on joining Liverpool, with personal terms not an issue for either party.
Marc Guehi and his expiring contract
Marc Guehi has been an utmost professional despite entering the final 12 months of his deal with Crystal Palace. While it is clear that the 25-year-old is ready to embark on a new adventure, he has not agitated for a departure and is willing to remain with the South London club throughout the 2025/26 season.
The English international has turned out over 150 times thus far for Crystal Palace while chipping in with nine goals and four assists. However, Guehi’s contract situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, with Chelsea and Liverpool among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Will Liverpool sign Guehi?
Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi makes sense. While the Reds have already signed Giovanni Leoni from Parma Calcio in the ongoing transfer window, the uncertainties surrounding the long-term futures of Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate have compelled them to chase Guehi’s signature. With personal terms not posing an issue, Liverpool will aim to seal a deal worth £35 million.
As for Chelsea, Levi Colwill’s long-term knee injury has forced Chelsea to seek a centre-back from the market, with Enzo Maresca going on record to demand a new central defender. Several candidates have thus emerged on Chelsea’s radar, with the 25-year-old Englishman also a viable target.
However, while the Blues are pursuing a last-gasp hijack of Liverpool’s move for Guehi, it will be surprising to see him pick the West London club over the Premier League champions. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the English international.
