“We have to take care” – Barcelona manager Hansi Flick provides updated on injured pair

Barcelona have had a good start to their La Liga title defence, which continues on Sunday with a trip to Vallecas, where they will face Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona have struggled at Vallecas in recent years, although they did come from behind to defeat Rayo 2-1 last season. As per Diario AS, head coach Hansi Flick is hoping for a repeat result on Sunday, although he has recognised that it will be a very difficult match for his side.

“It was important to start with six points, but we want to win the third game. Rayo are doing a great job, they know what they want to play, both in attack and defence. It will be a tough game, and the pitch is not as big as others.

“They play with a lot of intensity. We have to do it with confidence and take advantage of the players we have who can play one-on-one.”

Flick will be without Gavi for the trip, as Barcelona confirmed on Saturday morning that he has been ruled out with a slight knee injury. His manager is confident that the 21-year-old will be available after the international break.

“That’s what we expect, that he’s back against Valencia. It depends on his evolution. From yesterday to today, he’s improved. He has to work, and we must wait for him to evolve.”

Flick confirms Marc Bernal is edging closer to a return

Flick was also asked about Marc Bernal, who tore his ACL during that victory at Rayo last season – which was just over a year ago. The 18-year-old will not make his comeback on Sunday, but it is not too far away.

“He is unavailable, but I think he has taken a big step forward. He is stronger than a year ago. I’m not going to say he’s very close, but the decision is up to the medical staff. He is very young and we have to take care of him.”
