Tottenham make their move to sign Manuel Akanji

Tottenham have made an enquiry for AC Milan-linked Manuel Akanji, with Thomas Frank searching for defensive reinforcements before the deadline.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have entered the race for Manuel Akanji as they would like to sign the defender before the deadline. Spurs have reportedly enquired about the Swiss defender, who is already linked with AC Milan, as Manchester City could sell for the right price.

Manuel Akanji’s future at Manchester City is in doubt as the defender could leave the Etihad in the final days of the window. The last few weeks have seen the defender being linked with multiple clubs, as AC Milan are the latest to show big interest.

Milan are ready to pay £15 million to get a deal done, and are in talks with the defender to agree on personal terms with the Swiss defender. Crystal Palace also made a similar offer, and so far, a move to Selhurst Park does not appear on the cards.

Milan are the strongest contender for the 30-year-old Manchester City defender, as he rejected overtures from Galatasaray despite earlier reports stating he was close to joining the Turkish giants. However, there’s a new player in the race, as Tottenham have enquired about the defender, in a bid to bring him to north London.

Spurs are eager to finish the window with a few signings and have already signed Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. They are interested in a new defender and have been linked with a move for Manchester City’s Nathan Ake. Now, they are either interested in Akanji in addition to the Dutchman or as an alternative.

Will Spurs sign Manuel Akanji?

Akanji may not feature prominently in Pep Guardiola’s plans this summer, as he might view young star Abdukodir Khusanov as an alternative to the Swiss star. Hence, the 30-year-old Manchester City defender can leave, especially now that he has entered the final year of his deal.

Spurs may have a better pitch compared to AC Milan, both on the financial and sporting side. Tottenham will feature in the Champions League, and are interested in Ajanji to add the required experience for the competition, as well as for their league journey. Spurs do have a good chance to sing, but much will depend on factors about the fee and personal terms.
